Responsible Gambling

Sports betting can be an enjoyable form of entertainment when done responsibly. But it carries real risk. Money lost to gambling is money that could have gone to rent, food, school fees, or savings. At Sportbet Tanzania, we believe that every bettor deserves honest information — not just about which bookmakers to use, but about how to protect yourself.

This page isn't filler. If you or someone you know is struggling with gambling, please read this carefully.

Recognising Problem Gambling

Problem gambling doesn't always look dramatic. It often starts small and builds gradually. Here are warning signs to watch for:

  • Spending more money on betting than you can afford to lose
  • Borrowing money or selling belongings to fund betting
  • Betting to recover previous losses (chasing losses)
  • Feeling restless or irritable when trying to stop or reduce betting
  • Lying to family or friends about how much you bet
  • Neglecting work, school, or family responsibilities because of betting
  • Feeling that you need to bet with increasing amounts to get the same excitement
  • Using betting as a way to escape problems or relieve stress
  • Continuing to bet despite negative consequences in your life

If you recognise three or more of these signs in yourself, it's time to take action. There is no shame in seeking help — problem gambling is a recognised condition, and support is available.

Responsible gambling tips for safe betting in Tanzania

Tips for Safe Betting

Responsible gambling starts with setting clear boundaries before you place a bet. Here are practical steps every bettor should follow:

Set a Budget and Stick to It

Decide how much money you can afford to lose each week or month. This is your betting budget — money that, if lost completely, would not affect your ability to pay bills, buy food, or meet other obligations. Never exceed this amount, regardless of how confident you feel about a bet.

Never Chase Losses

Chasing losses is one of the most dangerous habits in betting. When you lose, the urge to bet more to "win it back" is strong — but it almost always leads to bigger losses. Accept the loss, step away, and come back another day within your budget.

Set Time Limits

It's easy to lose track of time when betting, especially on your phone. Set a timer or decide in advance how long you'll spend on betting apps each day. When time is up, close the app.

Don't Bet Under the Influence

Alcohol and other substances impair judgement. Making betting decisions when you're not thinking clearly almost always ends badly. Bet with a clear head or don't bet at all.

Keep Betting Fun, Not a Job

If betting stops being enjoyable and starts feeling like something you have to do, that's a red flag. Betting should be entertainment — not a source of income, not a way to solve financial problems, and definitely not something that causes you stress.

Take Regular Breaks

Step away from betting regularly. Take a week off, or even a month. If you find it difficult to stop even for a short period, that's a sign you may need to reassess your relationship with gambling.

Self-Exclusion and Deposit Limits

Most reputable bookmakers operating in Tanzania offer tools to help you control your betting:

  • Deposit limits — Set a maximum amount you can deposit per day, week, or month. Once you hit the limit, you cannot add more funds until the next period.
  • Loss limits — Some bookmakers allow you to cap how much you can lose in a given period.
  • Session time limits — Receive reminders or get automatically logged out after a set duration.
  • Self-exclusion — Temporarily or permanently block yourself from accessing your betting account. During self-exclusion, you cannot place bets or deposit funds.
  • Account closure — You can request permanent account closure from any bookmaker at any time.

We strongly encourage you to use these tools proactively — don't wait until you have a problem. Setting a deposit limit when you first create an account is one of the smartest things you can do.

Gaming Board of Tanzania

The Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) is the government body responsible for regulating all gambling activities in the country. The GBT issues licences to bookmakers, enforces regulations, and works to protect players. If you have a complaint about a licensed bookmaker or need information about gambling regulations, you can contact the Gaming Board directly.

For more information about betting laws and regulations, see our guide on betting regulations in Tanzania.

Support Organisations

If you or someone you know needs help with problem gambling, the following organisations offer support:

  • Gamblers Anonymous — www.gamblersanonymous.org — A worldwide fellowship of people who have experienced gambling problems. Free meetings and resources.
  • BeGambleAware — www.begambleaware.org — Free information, advice, and support for anyone affected by gambling.
  • GamCare — www.gamcare.org.uk — Provides counselling, advice, and practical help for anyone harmed by gambling.

You don't have to face this alone. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

At Sportbet Tanzania, we take responsible gambling seriously. We will never encourage you to bet more than you can afford. Our about page explains our editorial approach, and our beginner's guide always includes responsible gambling reminders.
